Remodeling Need

When these clients purchased their home, and although there were many things they liked about it, the primary suite and its en suite bathroom were not one of them. With the primary bedroom and bathroom being such an important personal space, the homeowners needed it to function as a comfortable, welcoming and restful retreat. The home itself was “newer,” built in 2002. However, the previous owners had made finish choices that did not fit their personal design style.

The primary bathroom is one of the largest that Riverside Construction has done—close to 200 square feet with a soaring 12’ tall ceiling at its highest point—so space wasn’t the issue. In fact, the large space created issues. The shower had the “more trendy” open concept without a door, but with the high ceilings, the homeowners complained of being cold while showering. There was little thought to storage needed within the shower as well. Two items the homeowners considered eyesores were the glass block wall and the green tile surrounding the two-sided fireplace over the jetted tub.

The primary bedroom had good bones overall, including a tray ceiling and solid wood trim, windows and doors throughout the space stained in a cherry finish. The homeowners wanted to incorporate this finish into the overall design.

The worst part were the faux roman columns sitting atop chunky knee walls separating the bedroom from the sitting area used as an office space. The forest green carpet that continued from the bathroom didn’t help either. And on the bedroom side of the two-sided fireplace, the homeowners did not like the “cheap” mantle and tile surround. The existing walk-in closet (as large as a small bedroom) was lacking in storage functionality.

Remodeling Solution

The homeowners engaged Riverside Construction to bring the primary suite into the 21st century.

The first thing we did was to tear out the forest green carpeting and all of the other carpet throughout the second floor. It was replaced with engineered wide plank Triangulo Brazilian Chestnut hardwood flooring.

The columns separating the master bedroom and office area were demolished and replaced with new custom built-in, see-through Crystal Cabinet bookshelves with cherry wood Tahoe doors coated with a sepia stain. The bedroom and closet were painted with a soothing gray.

Primary Bathroom Before Remodel Primary Bathroom Remodel

In the primary bathroom, we reconfigured the shower area to lower the ceiling. The clients still wanted no shower door, but by lowering the ceiling, we were able to keep the steam from escaping as quickly as it did before, thus providing a solution to the cold showers. Both vanities were updated to a floating style, with quartz countertops and new Delta fixtures in Champagne Bronze. Extra storage wasn’t necessary around the vanities because we doubled the size of the bathroom’s linen closet to both fill the space and function with the new shower shape.

The two-sided fireplace got a facelift too, with all-new contemporary tile running from floor to ceiling, accentuating the 12’ ceilings. Accent tile in 12×24 Anatolia Mayfair Strada Ash was featured on both the fireplace and the shower walls. To continue the contemporary feel, a new freestanding tub was installed in front of the fireplace with a floor-mounted tub filler.

The entire bathroom floor was re-tiled with heat coils running through it, with large format tiles set on a diagonal echoing the diagonal fireplace wall. A candle-style chandelier added even more elegance.

Result

While living in the primary suite may have previously caused the homeowners to cringe, the new look was welcoming, soothing, and offered the touch of modern elegance they wanted and will enjoy for years to come.
